Our values

Participation, diversity, free and open access, equity, sustainability and respectful collaboration - these values are at the core of Wikimedia Deutschland.

Projects

Wikimedia Deutschland supports a wide range of projects dedicated to Free Knowledge.

Topics

Most people associate Wikimedia with Wikipedia, which is absolutely correct, as Wikimedia is primarily the supporting organisation for the German Wikipedia. But Wikimedia Deutschland does much more than that.

Political Positioning

Wikimedia Deutschland believes that access to knowledge is a human right and in order to realise this human right, appropriate laws, regulations, guidelines and practices are necessary. That is why we advocate for political, legal and institutional frameworks that enable free access to knowledge, education, data, cultural heritage and software.

What the team says

Lilli Iliev
Team Public Policy and Public Sector

‘I consider it a true privilege to be able to work in WMDE's policy team ensuring that the internet is shaped by rules that serve the common good. Working with people who not only uphold principles like responsibility, fairness and transparency, but who also live by and develop them in their everyday work, motivates me each day anew.’

Dan Shick
Team Product and Development

'After a long time in Silicon Valley, I joined Wikimedia Deutschland and immediately learned an important lesson: working not toward profit but toward a common altruistic goal makes work a pleasure, not a chore. I've truly never worked with a group of people so kind to one another and at the same time so committed to their work as my beloved colleagues at Wikimedia Deutschland. I feel lucky to work here!'

Claudia Lang
Team Organizational Development

‘In this organization I can support a worthy cause, and I’m surrounded by diverse individuals who share the same values.  Here I find myself in an appreciative and idealistic bubble -- in the most positive sense of the word -- where we’re all working together towards the future we want.’

Beate Leitermann
Team Communities and Engagement

‘I think it's great to work in a team where people in different stages of life come together: I provide the calmness, they provide the pace.’

Alan Ang
Team Product and Development

‘Working at Wikimedia Deutschland brings great joy to me daily. Everyone does their part in ensuring that the sum of all human knowledge is free and accessible to all, and is guided by our core values. At the Software Development Department, we work tirelessly together with global institutions and volunteer communities to make Wikidata and the Wikibase software the heart of the global linked open data ecosystem.’

Diversity

At Wikimedia, employees with a wide range of specialist backgrounds use their professional know-how and expertise to promote the idea of Free Knowledge. Our fields of activity are as diverse as our employees: politics, fundraising, software development, education, science and culture, volunteer support, communications, events and back office and employee services.
